Simple Bike Company

Simple Bike Company is a bike company that hails from Europe, Denmark in fact. From what I can see at their site, the bikes are exactly what they are, simple and pleasing to look at. You can judge from the two Simple BMX frames in the picture above. Check them out at SimpleBMX.com

BMX shop in Singapore?

I just got asked via a post in the blog about the No. 1 BMX shop in Singapore. I really had to pause and think about this one. As it is, there is no number one BMX shop in Singapore because as a whole, bike shops in Singapore are generally devoid of any thing BMX-wise. they do not understand BMX and they do not know BMX. Those that claim to know BMX (like some of these monkeys claiming to be BMX consultants) are normally people who get all their knowledge from watching freestyle videos and MTV. Imagine that, if these so-called consultants do not know about BMX, how do you expect those bike-shops to know?

We are still waiting for the SACA AGM. We want to have BMX represented properly. In short, we do not want monkeys spoiling the scene. BMX should be represented by real BMXers, BMXers who raced or who have raced. We intend to do that. This website intends to do that.

The old-school BMX gathering at Bukit Batok Skatepark

As usual, it was a great gathering of all the old-schoolers and I must say that I really look forward to such gatherings. Present last night were Salleh, Eddy Chan, Freddy aka Kruger, Ismail, Hassan, Frederick, Selvan and his lady, Eddy Meng and Rick. The highlight of the day had to be the old "black horse" bike that Eddy Chan restored. Truly a work of art but my gosh, the laid back head angle made it exceedingly difficult for me to pedal, given my long legs and all. I had to sit way back at the end of the bike in order to ride this bike effectively.

Kawasaki BMX team

One of my friends just showed me a video of the Kawasaki BMX Team. Looks like they are taking a leaf out of Kuwahara's hat by making bikes as well. They look an awful lot like the Kuwahara complete bikes. Could this be a resurgence? You never know. Cool!

The monkeys are still around

Had a brief chat with an old cycling friend of mine yesterday. He confirmed that the rumours are indeed true. Tthere are some monkeys who are exploiting the Youth Olympics for personal gain or even monetary gain. No names mentioned but some among these monkeys are not even BMXers now nor in the past. Perfect. Just perfect. I told my friend to just relax and watch the freak show happen. I wonder if any of the monkeys are reading it now?

More on Yeti and their BMX bikes

Gene made a comment on my post (Thanks Gene!) and provided me a link to his website where the whole Yeti BMX story is. The link is located here and it is a very good read indeed. It is good to see that even hard-core MTB companies are making BMX these days.

How to get started in BMX racing

I have been asked this question many time in the flurry of calls and emails that I have been getting lately. Apparently some people do not know how to start. Never fear! We are here!

There are many sites that show how to get that first start in BMX and one of them is my friend from the US who was involved in the bike industry some time back. Jack Baruth or Jim Boswell (his pen name) as he is known as has an excellent website at http://www.bmxbasics.org with lots of insightful articles. One of the articles is Getting started in BMX racing. Lots of advice there but in a nutshell:

  1. A long-sleeved T-shirt
  2. Long pants or jeans
  3. A full-face helmet
  4. Shoes with flat soles
  5. Gloves (not really necessary but recommended)
  6. A 20" BMX in good working condition
There is another site here that also has a brief description.

So with that in mind, get your stuff together and if I have not welcomed you before, welcome to the world of BMX! Youth Olympics here we come!

BMX racing, anyone?

That was the title of an article in the Sundays Times here in Singapore with regards to the Youth OLympics and as usual, the reporters (in this case Wang Meng Meng) did not do enough research before he or she wrote the article.

To those who may not know what I am referring to, The Sunday Times showed a picture of four guys on mountainbikes jumping and called that a BMX race. The bikes were not BMX bikes. Congratulations Wang Meng Meng. You have just contributed the confusion that the general public has on the sport of BMX racing. I have posted many pictures of BMXers here in the blog and this Singapore BMX blog is featured prominently in several search engines so you have no excuse whatsoever.

And another thing. I am a BMXer, a fan of all BMX disciplines but some people seem to have an agenda for riding on the Youth Olympics and BMX wave. Fine by all means but NOT at the expense of belittling the sport that has been around for almost 40 years.

I can say one thing I can expect more confusion here in Singapore as people who do not understand the sport put things in their unlearned perspectives.

Singapore to host the Youth Olympics 2010

Well, we did it! I am very proud to say that my country will be hosting the Youth Olympics 2010. Now. We need to get down to brass tacks. We have TWO years to start breeding and training BMX riders to compete in the youth Olympics. That means a world class BMX track needs to be built. Are you guys from the SSC and MCYS hearing this? It has been TEN years since we asked for facilities but you guys did not listen. Well, now that we have the Olympics, we have to move, and move fast! I am sure that I speak on behalf of all the BMXers here in Singapore that we will do all we can to realise that dream but you guys will have to come down to our level and for once, listen! So come on! Let us do it!

Ismail's newly restored Diamondback

Ismail is very proud of it and I can see why. It has been very beautifully restored to its former glory with a new paintjob, new decals and pads. The rims on this baby shine like anything since Ismail gives it a daily shine everyday. I mean look at it. If it were yours, you would be proud too!

Seems that the Animal Box Jump event at Vivocity was a great success! There are heaps of forum posts about the event here and here. As usual, Freddy aka Kruger was there to capture the event and very kindly posted his pics online. Check them out here: http://picasaweb.google.com/freddyfoo79/AnimalBMXBoxJumpFinals
